Tulsa 2005 Leake Auction -- A "WOW"
Tulsa, Oklahoma (June 2005) - “A howling success,” was the way Richard Sevenoaks, president of Leake Auction Company, described the Leake Collector Car auction held in Tulsa’s EXPO Square June 10-12. “We had a fabulous sale,” he added. Not only did we sell almost $9 million in cars and collectibles but with 636 cars offered for auction, we had the largest selection we’ve ever had. It was a tremendous weekend.”
In all, 398 cars and collectibles were sold during the three-day auction. The sale of all items totaled $8,751,799. “The auction market continues to be strong,” said Sevenoaks. “As we have discovered in both our Oklahoma City and Dallas sales in the last twelve months the public still has a longing for these marvelous machines.”
The Depression may have been a desperate time for the nation, but judging from the sales results the auto manufacturers of the time put together some of the finest and most highly sought-after cars ever. During the weekend of the auction the top three sales went to cars made in the 1930s. Topping the list was a 1931 Cadillac V-16 Series 452A which went for $325,000. In second place was a 1930 Packard Model 745 which garnered $226,800. Packard also supplied the next car on the list: a 1934 Super 8 Series 1104 which brought $166,860.
The Amos Minter collection consisting of three T-Birds, one each from 1955, 1956 and 1957, sold at no reserve for a total of $221,670.
Muscle and collector cars of the 1950s, ‘60s and ‘70s continued to sell very well. Fords, Chevrolets, Plymouths, Pontiacs, Shelbys, Dodges, Mercurys and Chryslers all sold in the $50,000 - $100,000 price range.
Of course, it’s nice to have a stuffed wallet in any auction but, as in previous Leake auctions, you could find a bargain. A 1976 Chrysler Cordoba went for only $350 and a 1980 Mercedes-Benz 300 was purchased for $475. Many automobiles sold for under $10,000 with names like Rolls-Royce, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Studebaker, Lincoln Continental, Triumph and Packard represented. For those looking for off-beat items perhaps the most unusual was a year-old log chapel. It went for $9,000.
