LEAKE AUCTION
HOW IT ALL BEGAN

Press Releases
“Almost New” ’32 Ford at Auction

TULSA, Okla. (May 16, 2005) Of all the cars to be offered June 10-12 at the Leake Collector Car Auction at Expo Square in Tulsa, OK, none has the pedigree of a certain 1932 Ford Model 18. According to owner Stephen Ramsey his research showed it was not only built by Ford, it was built FOR a Ford, one Henry Ford to be exact.

“The Fords had a summer residence in Sweden,” says Ramsey, “and they shipped Fords across the Atlantic for their personal use. The cars, of course, had the steering wheel on the left side of the car and, although the Swedes then drove on the left side of the road and had the steering wheel on the right side of the car the Fords never decided to make the change.

“At that time Ford had no manufacturing plant in Sweden so whatever work had to be done on the cars was literally done in-house.”

The Ford Model 18 in question was one of Henry’s personal cars according to Edsel Ford III. It was a six-wheel V-8, the only roadster of its kind, and was called a six-wheeler because it carried two spare tires, one on each of the front fenders.

In the rumble seat could be found another treasure: a tool satchel. The top Ford executives were given special tool satchels, and as Henry was the top of the top, he was extra-special. It still lies snuggled down in the rumble seat of this Ford Model 18.

After 25,000 miles his car was put up on blocks. Although Sweden was neutral during World War II Americans didn’t take European holidays and the car languished. It continued to spend its days on blocks until three years ago when Ford Motor Company decided to have a huge world-wide celebration of the firm’s 100th anniversary.

By then Ford had a plant in Sweden and the Swedes were told to take Henry’s Model 18 and refurbish it, which they did. Because it had been under a protective roof all those years all the equipment on the Ford is original; including Henry Ford’s tool satchel.

23 new world record Ford prices were set at the John Woodhead auction this past September and “I expect,” laughs Ramsey, “that I could break the car down and just sell the individual parts for a quarter million, the tool satchel alone might be worth that much.”

There aren’t many original 1932 cars around these days, particularly Ford Model 18s. It is one of approximately 600 cars that will be offered for sale at the 2005 auction, but it will undoubtedly be one of the stars of the show. You can view this car on our website: www.leakecar.com. It will be sold on Saturday, June 11, 2005 as Lot No. 2466.
